Graphene
is one of the most exciting materials being investigated today, not
only out of academic curiosity but also with potential applications in
mind. Graphene sheets offer extraordinary electronic, thermal and
mechanical properties and are expected to find a variety of
applications, such as sensors, nanocomposites, batteries,
supercapacitors and hydrogen storage. Recently, a large number of
papers have described the dispersion and exfoliation of graphene oxide
(GO). This material consists of graphene like sheets, chemically
functionalized with oxygen groups such as hydroxyls and epoxides that
stabilize the dispersion of the nanosheets in water. From the chemical
point of view, the presence of oxygen functionalities at GO surface may
be very interesting since they provide reactive sites for chemical
modification using known carbon surface chemistry.
This communication will address chemical strategies that have been
particularly relevant in our research for the preparation of
nacomposite materials based on graphene and exploitation of its
potential applications. In particular, examples of inorganic and
organic functionalization of GO will be discussed.
