A
mechanical seal is a type of seal used in rotating equipment, such as
pumps and compressors. It consists of a mechanism which promote the
connection of systems or mechanisms, preventing leakage or excluding
contamination. A common cause of failure of these devices is there end
face wear out, thus the use of a hard, smooth and wear resistant
coating such as nanocrystalline diamond would be of great importance to
improve their working performance. In this paper, a review of the
different approaches used to improve the diamond coating
characteristics has been presented. Before this, the major problems
hindering rotary seals, namely the successful nucleation and growth of
diamond on the seals base materials and a layout criteria for possible
interlayer selection to give optimum results in producing adherent
diamond coatings are highlighted. Finally, the paper presents the
challenges that need to be met, which relate to the successful
implementation of diamond coatings on the working components.
